  • The goal was to modernize Craftsman’s riveter offerings with features that improve comfort, reduce user strain, and solve for storage and mandrel management challenges. The solution needed to maintain durability, ensure ease of use for a wide range of hand sizes, and create a clear competitive advantage at retail.

  • User research guided early design decisions, with emphasis on identifying handle configurations that minimized pressure points and required less force to operate. Prototyping and field testing confirmed that a curved handle provided the best balance of ergonomics and confidence in use. In parallel, the team collaborated with engineers to develop a more secure and practical mandrel hopper. After multiple iterations, the final hopper design incorporated a snap-fit lid and stopper features to prevent accidental opening during use, ensuring reliable performance on the jobsite.

  • The final riveter design delivered measurable improvements in comfort and ease of operation while adding thoughtful features that simplified workflow. By resolving long-standing issues with mandrel storage and enhancing ergonomics, the product reinforced Craftsman’s commitment to user-centered innovation—positioning the brand as a leader in a competitive category.
